Based on this poll, the top issues from participating residents were growth, infrastructure, and traffic (32 per cent), healthcare (28 per cent), and recreation amenities (26 per cent).

Let's tackle this a bit deeper with the top issue. Growth occurs in cities, but with rapid growth, it puts heavy pressure on existing systems, which creates stress and limitations that ripple down to other systems. This includes increased traffic, affordability issues due to supply, a need for better roads and core arteries, and increased infrastructure for amenities and services due to the lack of capacity within the current infrastructure.

The result? Our community of Airdrie is stressed and reaching several tipping points.

Airdrie is at an important stage of transformation. It is at a place of evolution from a suburban bedroom community, with a small-town feeling, into a mid-sized city, being the 3rd largest city in Alberta on the horizon.

Within this next stage, Airdrie will be shaped by an interplay of forces that are often competing against each other, but it will be important to anticipate them growing into the 3rd largest city.

In building a more sustainable city, it will be pulling on many levers to accommodate, but it starts with leadership. These leaders will need to always be listening to the voice of the community in building strong solutions. Within these solutions, there will need to be an integration of stronger collaborations to support infrastructure with developers, increased mixed-use developments, regional partnerships in improving economic corridors, increased connectivity to support active transportation, building a strong local economy for job creation, community infrastructure in neighbourhoods, and people-focused land-use planning.
