Tools: What is Land Value Capture?

Let's talk about growth, balance, and regeneration in city building!

It truly is a partnership between the community, industry, and governance.

When we look at city building, there are tools available to create our neighbourhoods and cities. It is understanding how we can build and use them in creating strong systems. Let's explore Land Value Capture.

For example, every time a city invests in a new transit stop, widens a road, or improves a park, nearby property values increase. This model results in landowners capturing the gains, while the city that made the public investment struggles to fund the next project. It is a system that is not sustainable.

The idea of Land Value Capture is that when public investments are made, they generate private land value, which increases. A share of those gains can be regenerated for future public investment. It is a way of shaping land use, equity, and growth.

Overall, it is reclaiming a portion created by collective action and putting it back into infrastructure and services. It is a great tool created collectively and reinvested collectively!
